Varan Phal/ Chakolya

Ingredients:-

*(For dough)
  • Whole wheat flour- 1 cup
  • Water- to knead the dough
  • Turmeric powder, red chili powder, roasted carom seed and salt- as per your taste
  • Oil- 1 tsp

*(For making dal)
  • Soaked Tur dal (for about 2hrs at least)- 1 ½ cup.
  • Water- (to pressure cook dal) and for runny consistency.
  • Oil- 1 tbsp.
  • Ghee- 1 tsp.
  • Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, turmeric powder, hing, methi seeds, curry leaves powder, red chili powder- (for tadka).
  • Kokam- 1-2.(if you don't have kokam you can take tamarind pulp/ amchur powder 1 tsp)
  • Garlic paste- 1 tsp (optional)
  • Jaggery, salt-as per taste
  • Chopped coriander, piece of lemon, & grated dry coconut- for garnishing.
Method : -
  1. First pressure cook the dal by adding enough water, turmeric powder and hing for about 4-5 whistle.
  2. On the other in a mixing bowl add whole wheat flour, turmeric powder, red chili powder, roasted carom seed, salt, oil and  knead the dough by adding water (just like our regular roti atta). Keep a side for 15-20 mines.
  3. Now heat a sauce pan with oil, when oil become hot add mustard and cumin seeds, add hing, turmeric powder, red chili powder, methi seeds, curry leaves powder, kokam, garlic paste, saute 2 min.
  4. Add cooked dal, mix it well in tadka. add water as per your desire consistency, bring to boil, now add jaggery and salt.
  5. When it boils, allow to simmer it on low flame.
  6. Meanwhile take a dough divide it n to two, roll a big roti out of it.
  7. With a sharp knife cut parallel and then across lines to create square or diamond shape.
  8. Now drop this prepared diamonds in the bubbling dal.
  9. Stir, cover and allow to cook should take 4-5 mines.
  10. Add little more water if required, but make sure when done the consistency should be saucy and runny.
  11. When done switch off the flame, sprinkle chopped coriander and grated dry coconut on top, serve hot immediately with dollops of ghee on top and squeeze little piece of lemon.
